MORE FIYAH, MORE FIYAH, MORE FIYAAHHH

SPACELY SPROCKETS

GRADUATION ALBUM LISTENING EXPERIENCE PT. 3 - I WONDER from kwest on Vimeo.

Promo video for Kanye West's I Wonder utilizing video from Tron.

Kanye is starting to trickle out the videos commissioned for his album release party and my hat goes off to the dude (or chick) who edited these. the videos released so far are edits of 2001, Akira, Tron and Oldboy. with the exception of Oldboy1 all of these movies totally work into the futuristic soundscape that Kanye seemed to be playing with (through incorporating more synth heavy production) and infatuated with on Graduation.

All of these films are classic and pretty easy/obvious choices for futurism and sheen. 2001, Akira and Tron range from being ~30 to 20 years old but all still hold up visually because of their stunning art direction and effects. Tron probably looks the most dated but the v 1.0 CGI really feels more like an aesthetic choice and strong point in hindsight rather than a technical limitation, due to its outstanding deployment. do young heads (late 80's on born dudes/chicks) even mess with Tron? its a huge visual/cultural marker for mid/late 20's and older mofos, but its not as huge outside of the demographic as say 2001, where its ubiquitous.

GRADUATION ALBUM LISTENING EXPERIENCE VIDEOS PT.2 - AKIRA CUT TO STRONGER from kwest on Vimeo.
Theres a reason Akira is THE most well known Anime of all time. its everything we in the west have come to know of Japan (bizzare, futuristic, tech driven) mixed with ultraviolence and dystopian grit. some how it works with the very glitzy Daft punk sampling Stronger. kanye did a nice shout out to Akira in the actual video for Stronger with the hospital escape scene. dudes blatant nerdistry never ceases to amaze/impress me.

GOOD MORNING 2001 from kwest on Vimeo.
2001...fuck dude, perfection. kubrick at his most indulgent and abstract. doesnt quite work as well with the song as some of the other videos, just because the song doesnt languish long enough to let the weight of the imagery hit you. you really need a good 6 minute + song to start synching up with 2001 (paging Isis circa 2002 - 2004)

1 Oldboy is easily one of my favorite movies of all time, if you havent seen it Netflix that ish immediately. an uber stylish korean flick about revenge, violence and isolation. if youve seen Oldboy, you know whats up and you need to see the end of the vengeance triology Sympathy for Ms. Vengeance which is even more beautiful than Oldboy and somehow just as fucked up.

WHERE ARE THE WILD THINGS?

this is a f/x test shot for spike jonze's up coming where the wild things are adaptation. apparently this isnt the right child actor, nor the correct wild thing suit. with that taken into consideration the clip is still quite moving. it interesting to see the monster get jealous of robots (which are across the board awesome) and reconcile with the boy in one scene. it plays perfectly like many a childhood interactions, and its great to see a imaginary character in a child's movie that isn't portrayed as an adult nor a happy all the time child. this imaginary character shows the worst of childish emotions as well as the wide eyed ability to play and inquisitiveness of a child. im extremely eager to see this when it comes out next year.

this scene kinda feels like the childhood scene from eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, where joel [ya boy jim carrey] attempts to hide his memory of penelope from mind erasing in a deep memory of his childhood. this scene also plays upon the kinda cruel, insensitive and sometimes down right fucked up part of being a lil kid. and in a movie of moving scenes this one had to be one of my favorites. *the scene starts @ 2:45

as an added bonus theres also this really great spike jonze intro to a fully flared skate video with music by m83. m83's music is just as dramatic and raw as any of these scenes and it wouldn't not be entirely out of the realm of possibility for him to score WTWTA. but thats really just me wishing more than anything.

SED QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES

Hot off the presses are the new new images from the Zack Snyder adaptation of Alan Moore's Watchmen. I was and still am more than a little apprehensive about this graphic novel/comic book being brought to the screen. watchmen is the best of a medium, hands down a perfection of the superhero comic. its an incredibly dense piece of fiction, complex, grandiose and emotional and deserves and adaptation that hits all of those notes square on. and its one of my favorite books ever. with these first set of images it looks like at least visually were stepping in the right direction. the real deal breaker will be to see how they realize dr. manhattan, the oft naked bald light blue god like superhero.

THE COMEDIAN

NITE OWL

this costume is a great interpretation of the source material, really filling in details that werent present before while keeping with the style and feeling of the original costume. the tiny feathers serving as chain mail are a nice touch, and shout pout to Archie in the back, i see you son!

OZYMANDIAS

while the costume for some reason feels a lil batman forever-y to me, im still loving this image for the lighting and the expression on Ozymandias' face. if youre familar with the story his look betrays the intensity and focus of the character. but at the same time we dont get the likeable gregarious superstar side of him. at some point tom cruise's name was thrown around for this role and while he could clearly nail the superstar, uber man, child of privilege side of Ozy. i don't know if he'd quite get that disturbingly icy stare down cold.

RORSCHACH

this is straight out of the source material. dead on. i really hope they incorporate cgi to animate his ever changing mask.

THE SILK SPECTRE II

looks a lil off broadway cabaret performance, but so did her outfit in the source material so i guess its all good

SO_OBNOXIOUS

DVNO video art directed by So_Me.

i dig the homage to 80's movie, tv and video game iconography and logos. So_Me always shows a great attention to and fascination with typography so this video only makes sense. always kills it with the inspiring transitions as well, however, i would like to see what he can do that doesnt involve heavy typographic elements though.
